The word ashtah in Sanskrit means number eight (8). This method takes into consideration the 7 planets, and the lagna (ascendant) to make the total score of 8. Ashtakavarga is one of the techniques to assess the strength of the planets in your horoscope. We create Ashtakavarga tables based on your birth chart, and use it to predict if the current planetary transit would give malefic or benevolent results to you. This is the bridge between Astrology and Phrenology. The concept of Ashtakavarga is fairly straightforward but it involves creation of 7 ashtakavarga charts, i.e., one each for the 7 planets of the week. Each planet gets a score when it is favorably positioned to itself, and the other entities. They don’t get a score if positioned unfavorably.

Imagine the Sun gets 1 point when it is favorably transiting with respect to its own position in the natal chart, and gets a 0 otherwise. Likewise, the planets Moon, Mars, Mercury, etc., contributes to Sun’s ashtakavarga only when the Sun transits favorably with respect to the other planets’ natal position. The ashtakavarga techniques consider the Sun, Mars, and Saturn as the malefic planets Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus as benevolent planets. Some astrologers consider the malefics with a ashtakavarga score of 4 (or above) promises good results during their transit through the house, and that for the benefic planets to be 5 (or above). Other applications for ashtakavarga include identifying the scar and/or birthmarks in a person’s body.

    FAQs

    •

My Moon sign is Makaram. I was born in Thula lagna. Saturn is transiting through my Moon sign and am worried how disruptive this transit is going to be?

Take a look at Saturn’s ashtakavarga points in your chart. If the planet gets a score of 4 (or above) then per Vedic Astrology the Saturn may not present you difficulties.

    •

I am born with a birthmark (mole) in my right hand around the biceps area. How are we to explain this with ashtakavarga?

The shoulder and the hands are to be studied as the 3rd house. Take a look at your 3rd house lord and see if this planet has secured more than 5 points on a scale of 8.

    •

Which year, month, and day will be fortunate for me? Explain this per ashtakavarga principles.

Let’s take the Jupiter (Guru), the Sun, and Moon ashtakavarga charts respectively for the yearly, monthly, and daily transits. Please mark the Rasi/Sign where Guru gets its maximum points on a scale of 8. Whichever year(s) Jupiter passes through that sign will be your best year. Likewise, use the Sun’s ashtakavarga charts to identify your fortunate month and that of the Moon to identify the fortunate days in a month.

Which is the best lagna for me to start a new endeavor?

Bring up your Sarva Ashtakavarga (SAV) chart. This is the sum total of the points received by the lagna, and all 7 planets in each of the zodiac signs. Identify the sign that has got the maximum points on your SAV chart. Choose that sign as the lagna for you to launch on new endeavors. The caveat is that the lagna (chosen muhurtha) should not be afflicted by the negative planetary transits.
