In early 1996, home renovation work was underway in a property adjacent to Balu’s childhood house. During those times it is not uncommon in southern India to plant coconut trees along the periphery of one’s property. These trees serve as a plantation “boundary” for one’s land with the adjoining one’s. The “to-be neighbors” were insisting on cutting down a coconut tree located in the NW corner of Balu’s land. The tall coconut tree was in it’s peak yield delivering hundreds of coconuts each year. The tree was slightly tilted off and was not encroaching the neighbor’s air space either. They ended up citing the principles of Vaastu Shastra to cut the tree.

Balu came across an interesting principle, Vaastu Shastra, when he was about 19 years. Despite begging and pleading not to cut down the coconut tree the next door neighbor barged into Balu’s home and cut off the tree when no one was at home. In the western world this act could be considered equivalent to a hit-and-run case. Unfortunately, no other neighbors nor homeowners’ association came to the rescue of Balu’s family. Nor was any compensation made for cutting down the tree. Balu’s parents left it as a sanction from God and forgave the neighbors.

However, Balu had a firm conviction no shastra (Vedic principle) authorizes the cutting down of a neighbor's tree and that too when the tree was bearing veggies, fruits, and flowers. The neighbor’s act of cutting down the tree in the absence of the property owner was absurd and highly condemnable. Balu’s mother used to draw water from a well and feed the coconut trees. The pain in his mother’s heart manifested as tears. The situation motivated him to study the intricacies of Vaastu Shastra.
